Wendy and I have been often asked, by our customers, about search engine optimization, and how they can achieve better ranking for their websites. However, recently we were asked about the process for getting more images from a website to be listed in the Google Image Search Results. Hmmm, we pondered – and wondered if there indeed could be a process for increasing the chance of having your website images listed in the Google Image index.
A little bit of research later, and we had our answer. Yes, there are a few things you can do to increase the likelihood that Google finds, lists and ranks your images in the Google Image Index. Many of the items below follow general good search engine optimization efforts – so you may already be accomplishing these:
Always rename the filename of your image to use your keyword phrases and describe the content of the image in your image name
Change DSC0574681.jpg to bWyseInternetMarketingLogo.jpg
Add an alt tags using your keyword phrases when you add the image to your site.
Supporting text are the words placed close to the image on the page.
Add your images to the following properties:
Just as you can have an xml sitemap for the pages of your website, you can also have an image xml sitemap, which tells Google where to find your images. Create an xml image sitemap, and be sure to also add it to your website, as well as your Google Webmaster Tools.
