Singles Day originated in China in 1993 at Nanjing University. Occurring on November 11th, it is called Singles Day because 11/11 is made up of four “ones”. After graduating Singles Day became a part of mainstream society. Initially, it was a reason to party while being single.
In 2011, the year that could boast six “ones”, gave reason for even bigger parties. And, it also marks the Internet’s Online Retailers adoption of Singles Day for shopping promotions. Last year on Singles Day more than 17.8 billion dollars were spent online. As compared to America’s Cyber Monday, where only 3.45 billion dollars were spent online.
As of 2015, some retailers have begun offering Singles Day specials. Last year’s sales totaled 1.5 billion dollars. Admittedly, there are far fewer “singles” in the United States as compared to China.
Never the less, if you are an online retailer, consider offering a special this year on November 11th!
